RAMS HOLMES PZAZ (“PZAZ”)

Check out this classically handsome pup with the beautiful naturally mascara’d eyes.  Although both his mom and dad were successful racers, Pzaz never professionally raced due to a minor injury he sustained early in his training. He’s a happy guy with a “helicopter” tail that wags in big circles when you interact with him.

PAT C APOLLO J (“APOLLO”)

This good-sized (77#) impressive fellow was a force to be reckoned with on the track. Although his resume includes just 65 races, he was “in the money” 66% of the time, racked up 17.5 performance points, and was the “2015 IGA Inaugural Champion” at the Dubuque, Iowa, track. Apollo is friendly and gregarious.

MRL APOLLO (“APOLLO”)

Apollo is a light blonde fellow with distinctive yellow eyes. He originally came to AAGA last April following a successful racing career and was immediately adopted. MARCH WITH AAGA IN ATLANTA’S 135th ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE!

It’s almost that time again – Atlanta’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.  This gala parade, dating back to 1858, will be held Saturday, March 11th, in Midtown Atlanta. A fun event with emphasis on children and families, it features over 200 units including clowns, floats, bands, dancers, drill teams, various rescue organizations and more. Adopt A Greyhound Atlanta has been a popular participant in this event for decades. It’s a great opportunity to meet and mingle with other Greyhound owners and show off your favorite hounds to the crowd. This year, like last year, both AAGA and Southeastern Greyhound Adoption (SEGA) have requested that the two organizations be grouped together. That makes the Greyhound contingent even more impressive!

So, PLAN TO COME OUT AND MARCH WITH US! No experience required…and you’ll have a Greyt time! Just be there by 11:30 AM to check in at the corner of West Peachtree and 17th Street. (When you check in, parade volunteers will guide you to the Greyhounds.)  The parade will kick off at 12 noon.

If you don’t have a Grey of your own but would like to participate in the parade, check with Carl. AAGA will no doubt have available hounds who will be happy to let you take them for a walk.

For more information on the parade route, the participants, and all the surrounding fun events – including “Luck of the Square”, the post-parade party at Colony Square – visit http://atlantastpats.com/.

BETTERLEE (“TRENT”)

In 2012 Trent was a successful racing Greyhound.  Since then, Trent, who was recently returned to AAGA, has lost two “forever” homes over the last four years, both through no fault of his own.  The first time, his owner took off for Wyoming after two years, and Trent ended up back at AAGA. The second time, his adopter suffered a dire financial setback, losing both job and home.  Despite all these changes in his environment, Trent remains a happy and healthy, sweet friendly boy who loves attention and, we feel, deserves a TRUE “forever” home.  He has amicably lived with cats and a Chihuahua.

XYLITOL POISONING – IT’S ON THE RISE!

Xylitol productsXylitol is a very popular sugar substitute that now appears in more and more sugar-free products, such as chewing gum, candies, toothpaste, mouthwash and oral rinses (sometimes even canine ones!), children’s vitamins, cough syrup, and bakery products. Sugar free products are growing in popularity as they can help you to cut down on your visits to your Dentist Santa Barbara, but what it is being replaced by may have other health risks attached to it. Plus it is now an ingredient in a growing number of specialty peanut and other nut butters (e.g., Go Nuts Co., Hank’s Protein Plus Peanut Butter, Krush Nutrition, Nuts ‘n More, P28). Since peanut butter has traditionally been given to our pets as a special treat or perhaps in administering medications or stuffing Kong-type toys, this is of particular concern.

While xylitol is safe for humans, it is extremely toxic for dogs — 100 times more toxic than chocolate (see xylitol vs chocolate). Just very small amounts can cause seizures, liver damage, and even death. Suspicion of ingestion requires that you contact your veterinarian immediately. For more details on how to identify symptoms of xylitol poisoning and, better yet, how to insure your pet doesn’t get access to the substance, check out this site.

Other artificial sweeteners, such as saccharin (Sweet ‘n Low), aspartame (Nutrasweet), sucralose (Splenda) and Stevia (a plant derivative) are generally regarded as safe and should not cause significant illness other than possible diarrhea.

STREET OUTLAW (“OUTLAW”)

Outlaw can boast very unique blue brindle coloring with matching light eyes.  Despite exceptional lineage, with only a little over a dozen races to his credit, he was never destined to become much of a racer.  However, this handsome young man is very friendly and has been known to “smile”. Outlaw has been in a home for the past  5 months but was recently returned to AAGA when the adopter’s wife felt he was “too big for her to handle”.

IF YOU ARE NEW TO GREYHOUNDS….

WHOPPING WOODY (“WOODY”)

Woody is like a big cuddly teddy bear.  He’s a quiet and laid back guy who likes to lean in and tuck his handsome head under your arm or between your knees.  He can boast of a noteworthy pedigree and raced at Birmingham, Orange Park, and Tri-State, respectfully completing several dozen races.  He finished 3rd in his last race in February 2016, following which he was retired and rehomed by AAGA. He was recently returned to us through no fault of his own but due to a change in the financial status of his adoptive family.

KAIAS REDHEAD (“REDHEAD”)

After just a few dozen races, Redhead was retired from the track this past October.  She is a lovely young girl who is a bit hesitant when meeting new people—we call it “puppy shy”—but she quickly becomes very sweet and endearing once she gets to know you. She likes to drag her bed around with her and would even take it outside, if allowed.

EASI STEPHANIE (“INDIGO”)

Indigo is a plucky little thing, racking up 170 races before she was retired with a record of finishing “in the money” 54% of the time. Yet it’s hard to imagine her as being such a tough competitor, as she is very sweet and adorable, inquisitive and attention-seeking. Indigo was in a home for 22 months until recently when her adopters decided she was not compatible with another resident dog and returned her to Greys’Land.

GALLOWS HILL (“CAROLINA”)

Carolina is a confident, very friendly girl who loves attention.  She is a pretty gal, predominately white, with just a few black markings.  Her dad is an Irish Derby winner. Carolina herself was a successful racer, holding her own against the big boys and ending up “in the money” more than 55% of the time. After being in a home for the past 2 years, she was recently returned to AAGA  when her adopter was transferred to Ireland and could not take her with him.
