CM’S NONNA (“NONNA”)

Not yet 2 years old, Nonna never raced. She is a pretty girl who still exhibits patches of her shaggy puppy fur.  She is sweet but a bit timid, possibly because of her young age. She has free rein of the Greys’Land facility and is gradually becoming more comfortable in her new surroundings. She has staked out her spot on the couch.

PET INSURANCE — DO YOU NEED OR NOT?

Have you ever wondered about pet insurance? How does it work? What does it cover? What does it cost? Should you consider purchasing it or not? Well, here are three comprehensive pet insurance guides — one prepared by ConsumerAffairs.com, one prepared by Lendedu.com, and one prepared by Your Dog Advisor — that explain the “ins and outs” of pet insurance and could be helpful in answering all your questions. A couple of them also give their conclusions as to the top pet insurance providers. (The ConsumerAffairs site is also handy for a myriad of guides on purchasing all kinds of products.) You can also conduct this sort of research online yourself, to tailor your searches to exactly what you want and need in a policy, furthermore what your furry friend might need too. There is no doubt that these animals become a very cherished and loved part of the family, and most people would go all sorts of lengths to ensure their health and safety. This is why pet insurance is so important – depending on what happens to your dog, the situation might call for funds that you just can’t afford. This would mean devastating consequences for you and your pet. Especially with greyhounds who are well known as race dogs, as they can be struck with all sorts of health problems, many pedigree dogs also have illnesses common with their breed. Something that needs researching as well, before investing in a dog. Luckily there are so many places to compare pet insurance prices online so you can find one that is best suited to you. Make sure you get it – it’s worth it. You will thank this site one day!

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT DOG PARKS

We know that many of our adopters routinely take their Greyhounds to dog parks.  Usually these are fun events for both owner and dog.  But sometimes these excursions do not turn out as planned and even result in tragedy.

To avoid your play day becoming a possible trip to the vet or even worse, we urge you to check out these important dog park safety tips.

A MIDNIGHT KISS (“KISS”)

Kiss is that classic-looking red Greyhound with the most gorgeous naturally mascara’d eyes.  Her career consisted of 108 races at the Jacksonville and  Wheeling Downs tracks.  She is very ladylike, graceful and friendly.  She was recently returned to AAGA after spending 14 months in a home when her adopter’s health problems determined she was unable to care for the dog.

DE’S ACE (“ACE”)

FOUND A SPECIAL HOME!  Ace is a handsome 3-year-old guy, so sleek and shiny. He’s on the small side for a male – raced at 68 pounds – but has a huge personality.  He is so happy, so puppy-like, so affectionate, and so full of joy, you can’t help but fall in love with him.  So, why does he need a special home?  Ace has been diagnosed with Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), a rare eye disease in Greyhounds. While PRA is totally painless, there is, unfortunately, no treatment, which means that Ace will eventually go blind, probably within the next 2 years.  While we humans find this sad, blindness does not mark the end of a long normal and rewarding life for dogs.  They totally adjust to the gradual loss of sight by increasing reliance on their other senses, particularly scent and sound.  There are whole books and websites that give tips and tricks for living with a blind dog: don’t rearrange the furniture often; use scent markers (e.g., candles, plug-ins) in different rooms; wear a bell; use squeaky toys; block hazards with baby-gates, plants or other objects; use floor mats and rugs the dog can identify by feel; perhaps have another dog the affected one can rely on, etc. (We have a dog who boards at AAGA often who’s been totally blind for 6 years, and he, his “sister” Grey and his adopters do just fine.) We expect this super outgoing and endearing boy will have no problem coping with his vision loss and feel that he deserves a loving forever home of his own! Could you be that special adopter he is looking for???

PRAETOR (“PRAETOR”)

With his striking “tuxedo” markings — white blaze on face, white chest and belly, 4 white stockings, and white tipped tail — Praetor looks as if he is decked out for a big formal affair. And the white patch on the back of his neck is a clear indication of his Irish background. Praetor’s résumé consists of 50+ races. He is an outgoing playful fellow but would probably do best in a home without cats or small dogs.

CP’S TAVERN (“GARY”)

Gary is a very personable guy.  He always wants to be where people are.  When left on his own, however, he likes to inspect countertops, collect small loose items, etc. But because he’s so sweet and likes to give kisses, you can’t help but love him. Omega comes from a rather interesting racing background.  His dad was a 2006 All American and a record-holder, his mom was a successful racer in her own right, and his Irish grandfather lived in Australia. Omega himself is a real laid back gentleman. It’s hard to imagine that he racked up 155 races over his career. Outdoors he can’t wait to find a spot of cool dirt in the shade to stretch out. He’s a lovable fellow who gives kisses.

A CORAZON (“CONNOR”)

This young boy is so handsome but very shy, probably why he never raced.  Although he has free run of the Greys’Land facility, when there are visitors present, he generally maintains his distance and keeps to his dog bed.  He gets along well with other Greyhounds and is slowly getting accustomed to AAGA personnel. He does enjoy carrying big rubber toys around, plus he likes to go outside and spend time in the yard.
